Animation Education UK AIB

An introduction to AIB (The Arts Institute at Bournemouth)

Professional Animation Production requires a high Level of Practical skill, technical proficiency and a wealth of theoretical knowledge. This highly acclaimed, practical and stimulating course offers students a through experience in which they will develop a comprehensive understanding of the full production process. The course continues to reach the highest standards and has international industry recognition; it has received numerous prestigious awards and student's work is screened each year at animation festivals in the UK, China, Japan, Europe and the Americas. Student's work is of exceptional standards and recent employers of our graduates include Industrial Light and Magic, DreamWorks, Disney, Electronic Arts and Aardman Animations.
This course looks at animation production in a broad and holistic way, providing a thoroughly intensive and team-based experience. The course strives to offer the closest experience possible to that of the professional animator in industry.
All years work alongside each other from the start, emulating industry where animators have to be able to co-operate with and relate to people, and to talk ideas through.
In Year 1 the students will follow a disciplined schedule in fundamental studies, building up their skills. The course begins with a period of drawing studies to convert visual thinking and application of skills to animation. The unit "Key Principle of Animation" explores the basics of movement and timing leading to the "Translation of Drawing for Animation" performance and character design.
Year 2 equips the students with the sufficient skills required to work as assistants on major graduation productions alongside Year 3 students. This year concludes with productions research and development as graduation work.
In Year 3 the students will be assisted by Year 2 students, communicating in teams on major animation production work, together with colleagues on the film course. The end of this level is devoted to post production, sound, editing and two final units, preparing portfolios, exhibitions and appraisals before graduation.
Exceptional facilities include individual workstations and light boxes; the course has excellent links with industry and work experience is encouraged. The Institute also has a specialist library and a unique development unit.
